About Us

Federation of Women Groups (FWG)

The Federation of Women Groups (FWG) was established in 1997, following its conceptualization in 1995 by a group of women united by a common goal: to address the social injustices faced by women in the Gusii community of Nyanza Province, Kenya.

Among these injustices is the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which FWG is committed to eradicating. FWG is a national non-governmental organization (NGO), founded as a coalition of 250 women self-help groups.

Initially registered as a regional NGO in 1999 under the NGO Coordination Board, it became a national NGO in 2004. Since its formation, FWG has focused on empowering women and advocating for their rights through various community programs.

Our History

Our History

The Federation of Women Groups (FWG) was conceptualized in 1995 and officially founded in 1997 by a group of determined women in the Gusii community of Nyanza Province, Kenya. These women were driven by the need to combat systemic injustices, such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), that affected their communities. Over time, FWG has grown into a national force, uniting over 250 women self-help groups into a powerful NGO with a mission to empower women and transform lives.

Initially, FWG's focus was on providing a support network for women affected by harmful cultural practices and discrimination. Over the years, it expanded its scope to address other critical issues such as education, health, economic empowerment, and advocacy for women's rights. By mobilizing local women’s groups, FWG created platforms for women to access education, legal support, and resources to improve their lives and break the cycle of poverty.

In 1999, the organization was officially registered as a regional NGO under the NGO Coordination Board. This marked a significant milestone in FWG's history, as it began to attract attention from international donors and development partners. As a result, FWG was able to secure funding to expand its programs, which included health outreach, business development, and awareness campaigns to fight FGM and other harmful practices.

By 2004, FWG transitioned to a national NGO, reflecting its expanded mandate and the growing recognition of its work across Kenya. This shift enabled the organization to have a stronger influence in shaping national policies and advocating for women's rights at the government level. Throughout this period, FWG's grassroots programs flourished, empowering thousands of women across Kenya to take charge of their destinies.

As of today, FWG continues to be at the forefront of women's empowerment in Kenya. With a robust network of over 250 women’s groups nationwide, the organization is actively involved in projects aimed at improving the socio-economic status of women and their families. FWG’s efforts to combat FGM have been particularly impactful, with numerous community-based programs aimed at education, prevention, and rehabilitation of survivors.

FWG has also taken significant strides in the political arena. The organization has been instrumental in pushing for gender-responsive policies and ensuring that women's voices are heard in decision-making processes at both local and national levels. Through its advocacy work, FWG has helped establish platforms for women to engage with policy makers and participate in leadership roles.

Looking towards the future, FWG remains committed to its vision of a society where women are free from all forms of gender-based violence and inequality. With a focus on sustainable development, education, and social justice, the organization continues to grow, strengthen its partnerships, and work tirelessly to ensure that every woman in Kenya has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
